In Plate 2 the building in the centre background in front of which the crowds stand and watch the Carthusians pass has many of the features of the façade of the Farnese Palace. 5 Michelangelo, as noted above, was commissioned to complete the third storey after the death of Sangallo. When he took over, the facade had been completed to just above the third storey windows. He now designed and built a large cornice and raised the upper storey to hold it. In doing so he revised the design of the central window, enlarging it to form a door from which Farnese could present himself to the crowds below. Above this he added an architrave to support the coat-of-arms bearing the papal tiara which was intended to be placed there.
